The important job of fighting off foreign invaders, like bacteria, viruses and more serious illnesses such as cancer, lies with your immune system. The immune system is actually a complex and efficient system designed to destroy pathogens and abnormal cells.
When the system goes awry, immune cells can attack normal tissue; this is what is called autoimmune disease.
At the other end, an inefficient immune system allows pathogens to gain a foothold and cause illness.

The Three Main Parts of Your Immune System
The innate and humoral sides of your immune system are mainly responsible for keeping out and killing free-floating pathogens while the cell-mediated side kills cells already infected with diseases such as cancer.
While many treatments and supplement programs focus on the health of the first two sides, the cell-mediated side is particularly vulnerable. The part of the body which produces necessary proteins to support this side, the thymus gland, naturally diminishes with age. The Innate Immune System
The innate side includes body surfaces like your skin and mucous membranes that act as physical barriers against bacteria, viruses, and cancer. White blood cells, including macrophages that kill pathogens in a non-specific way, are also part of the innate immune system.
The innate system, present at birth, is a first-line defense against intruders but lacks the sophistication of the other two sides of the immune system. As a result, it sometimes allows bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens to “slip through the cracks.” Fortunately, the innate immune system has a back-up.
Humoral Immune System
The humoral component of the immune system (part of the acquired side) is powered by B lymphocytes or B cells. B cells are made in the bone marrow and each contains receptors that recognize specific proteins or antigens that they might encounter. Should a B cell come into contact with an antigen that fits the receptor, it attaches to the receptor and produces antibodies against that particular foreign antigen. These antibodies go on to bind to the antigen the antibody was made for, whether on a bacteria or other pathogen, and the immune system proceeds to destroy it. Some B cells also become memory cells. These cells are primed to recognize a particular antigen and respond to it rapidly, should they encounter it again. The humoral/antibody part of the immune system mainly defends against extracellular pathogens like bacteria circulating in the bloodstream or viruses that are free and not already inside a cell.
Cell-Mediated Immune System
The cell-mediated division (part of the acquired side) is orchestrated by T lymphocytes or T cells of which there are several types – T-helper cells, T-suppressor cells, and cytotoxic T cells. These cells are produced by a small gland called the thymus gland. Unlike humoral immunity, cell-mediated immunity doesn’t involve the production of antibodies. Instead, T-cells activate other cells called natural killer cells that kill virus-infected cells and tumor cells on contact.
T-cells can also induce the production of chemicals called cytokines that will identify and destroy pathogens and abnormal cells. Cell-mediated immunity primarily demolishes cells infected by viruses, tumor cells, and intracellular bacteria rather than bacteria and viruses circulating in the bloodstream.
